The Garrick
welcomes as a new member
anyone with experience of theatre or with a real commitment
to learn and take part. There are many
ways you can get involved, develop skills and enjoy
yourself whether or not you've got prior experience
of a theatre. There is a wide
range of pursuits for members to take part in such
as acting and directing, production, house services and marketing.
Take a look at the list below to see the duties members are
required to carry out when working towards and staging a performance.

Of course there's no obligation
to appear in a production if the performance side isn't
for you. Backstage work in particular is an area in which
people with no former experience can help out and experience
the 'roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the crowd'.
Assisting the stage manager or helping with costumes and properties
etc. will give an intimate insight into a production. The
person you are helping will train you and be with you throughout
the performances. Help may also be required with the stage
lighting and sound. If you have an interest in things both
technical and creative then this is another way of becoming
part of the show.
In addition
to all of the mainstream social
activities involved in running a theatre there are
regular social events. Members can often enjoy exclusive use
of the bar when shows are not running and play reading and
"words and music" evenings are also occasionally
held during the season.
On the
final night of a performance all involved are invited to the
after-show party which provides opportunity to "knock
a few back" and voice your opinion to fellow members
on their contribution to the performance. It is also tradition
for the cast to congregate at the theatre the following day
for the "set strike" where the set is taken apart
and the theatre is restored to it's former self ready for
the next production. A buffet lunch and drinks are provided.
Other
events include
theatre visits, play readings, organised social evenings,
and the annual Garrick Weekend where we book accomodation
in another area and arrange a variety of entertainments for
members. Suggestions will always be taken on board if there's
an activity you feel members would enjoy. The Annual Cricket
and Croquet challenge against Chads theatre always brings
out a crowd and great fun is had by all.
