Gripping,
dramatic reconstruction of childhood
Dennis Potter
deservedly achieved almost iconic
status as a scriptwriter and playwright
at the end of the 2Oth Century
for his accessible yet challenging
original talent.
This play relates the intriguing
and increasingly alarming activities
of seven-year olds on a summer
afternoon during World War II.
Willie tags along as burly Billy
bullies Raymond and is challenged
by fair-minded John. Audrey is
overshadowed by Angela's prettiness
and wreaks her angry frustrations
on the boys. All of them gang
up on the terrified 'Donald Duck'
who, abused by his mother and
ridiculed by his peers, plays
his own dangerous game of pyromania.
The dramatic resolution will not
disappoint.
