To coincide with our March 9-16 2019 production of Nick Dear’s play, The Dark Earth and the Light Sky, Stockport Garrick Theatre is holding a poetry competition!
The subject of your poem should be ‘Theatre’ – which could be about the Stockport Garrick, Shakespeare’s Globe, or theatre in general. It must be no longer than 14 lines. Rhyme is optional!
Set at the beginning of World War 1, The Dark Earth and the Light Sky is an exploration of the relationships between poet Edward Thomas (fated to die in France in 1917), his wife, his father, their friend, American poet Robert Frost, and writer Eleanor Farjeon. Meeting Frost was to change Thomas’ self-doubt of his poetry….
Your poem must not have been published anywhere else and must be the author’s own work.
Entries are to be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org marked ‘Dark Earth poetry submission’ to arrive by Saturday February 23rd 2019. Alternatively, post a copy of your poem to Stockport Garrick Theatre, Exchange St., Wellington Road South, Stockport, SK3 0EJ addressed to ‘Dark Earth Poetry submission’ to arrive by Saturday 16th February 2019. Please include a name, address, phone number and email address if you have one.
Winning entries will receive two seats for the first night’s performance and the poem will be published in the programme of ‘The Dark Earth and the Light Sky’. There is no cash alternative. Because of the nature of the play - which may not be suitable for those under 15, entries are restricted to those aged over 15.
Poems will be judged anonymously (but we need to know names and contact details for the prizewinners). Unsuccessful entries will not be contacted.
The judges’s decision is final.
