This ‘improbable farce’ concerns socialite and novelist Charles Condomine who lives with his second wife, Ruth.

His first wife, Elvira, died young seven years earlier. However, after being visited by a “happy medium” - the eccentric Madame Arcati - Charles finds himself haunted by the ghost of his first wife.

The ethereal and mischievous Elvira immediately starts to interfere in the life of Charles and Ruth, causing havoc in her efforts to disrupt their marriage and regain Charles’ love.
